3 Changes Coming to the ACT Test in 2020

Beginning with the administration of the September 2020 ACT test, students will have more choices for demonstrating their college aptitude. ACT has introduced section retesting, superscoring, and faster results with online testing. ACT Chief Commercial Officer Suzana Delanghe says the new changes will provide students with â€Å"a better opportunity to showcase their readiness and reach their maximum potential.† However, these new changes don’t come without criticism. ACT officials believe the new changes will level the playing field and help students achieve higher test scores. But critics see the changes as a strategic move as ACT attempts to compete with SAT. Though ACT was previously the most widely used test in the nation, SAT recently moved into the top position, with 2.1 million test-takers in 2018 compared to ACT’s 1.9 million. Section Retesting With the new changes, students can choose to retake only one section of the exam online. By focusing their study efforts on individual subjects—English, math, reading, science, or the optional writing test—students have a greater likelihood of boosting their scores. Plus, according to ACT, students who take the test more than once have slightly higher first-year college grades than those who test a single time. Superscoring Students who take the ACT test multiple times will be able to send their best ACT test results to colleges, which includes their calculated ACT superscore. The superscore displays the highest possible composite score across multiple ACT test attempts and section retests. Currently, if students want colleges to see these scores, they have to send multiple test results. When applying for college admission and scholarships, students will be able to submit the scores that best represent their strengths and abilities. ACT has also announced that superscoring is more predictive of how students will perform in college courses than other scoring methods. Faster Online Results Tired of waiting up to eight weeks to receive your exam scores? ACT will be rolling out a digital exam option at select ACT test centers, and hopes to eventually provide this option at all of its test centers. With online testing students can receive their scores in as little as two business days. Though this change is new to the ACT, other college admissions tests including the Medical College Admission Test, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) already have online testing options. How Will These Changes Benefit Students? Like all changes that have been made to the ACT and SAT tests in recent years, only time will tell if section retesting and superscoring will positively impact test scores and level the playing field as promised. At the end of August, SAT announced it would abandon its adversity score on student test results after the change fell under intense scrutiny. Adversity score, which the College Board originally introduced to add more context to a student’s exam scores, considers factors such as a student’s socio-economic background, the rigor of their high school, and the neighborhood in which they grew up. Parents criticized that adversity score falsely suggested a student’s achievements and challenges could be quantified. Many wonder whether ACT’s superscoring will be bound by the same fate. Or, as we discussed in a previous blog post, if the ACT and SAT tests will continue to evolve as more schools become test-optional. For now, section retesting and superscoring will help many college-bound students navigate the competitive college admissions landscape. By focusing their test prep efforts on individual subject areas and leveraging a composite score of their best test attempts, many students will be able to breathe a sigh of relief during an already stressful time. Using the Perl String Length Function

Perl is a programming language used primarily to develop web applications. Perl is an interpreted, not compiled, language. This means its programs take up more CPU time than a compiled language — a problem that becomes less important as the speed of processors increases.  Writing code in Perl is faster than writing in a compiled language, so the time you save is yours. When you learn Perl, you learn how to work with the languages functions. One of the most basic is the string length function. How to Find Length of a String in Perl Perls length function returns the length of a Perl string in characters. Here is an example showing its basic usage: #!/usr/bin/perl $orig_string This is a Test and ALL CAPS;$string_len   length( $orig_string );print Length of the String is : $string_len\n; When this code is executed, it displays the following:  Length of the String is: 27. The number 27 is the total of the characters, including spaces, in the phrase This is a Test and ALL CAPS. Note that this function does not count the size of the string in bytes — just the length in characters. What About the Length of Arrays? The length function works only on strings, not on arrays. An array stores an ordered list and is preceded by an sign and populated using parentheses. To find out the length of an array, use the scalar function. For example: my many_strings (one, two, three, four, hi, hello world);say scalar many_strings; The response is 6, the number of items in the array. A scalar is a single unit of data. It might be a group of characters, as in the example above, or a single character, string, floating point, or integer number.

Science And Will Essays - Kantianism, Concepts, Monism,

Science And Will Schopenhauer had an understanding of the Will, which has to separate parts. The Will to Life and Human Will. The Will to Life, was the over all striving that every animal did on a daily basis, the striving for the will to live. Schopenhauer, believed that the nature of life was suffering and that this suffering was manifested in the will to live. However, this will, in humans, was also manifested by Human Will, or striving for that life, such as studying, reading, etc. This human will also lead to suffering and strife, for as soon as humans would reach one goal, another set of problems or suffering would appear. In fact, Schopenhauer believed that if humans recognized how much suffering that there is in life and in the world, that they would want to kill themselves. However, if you look at all that suffering and decide to live anyways then you have conquered the will and you will no longer truly suffer. In quite a Buddhist theme, you have become liberated and redeemed from life. Moreover, there is a sense of passive acceptance, where one realizes to detach themselves from society. This is explained when Schopenhauer states, "The denial of the will to live does not in any way imply the annihilation of a substance; it means merely the act of non-violation: that which previously willed, wills no more. The will is a philosophical substance that can not be removed or killed. Why is it then that Science can not understand the will as interpreted by Schopenhauer? Schopenhauer believed that the will was an Idea, which was in it's own category. A category different form the a priori and the a posteriori. Science, according to Schopenhauer, is an a priori concept. A priori judgments take sense perception and molds it into a category. Schopenhauer believed that this world of sense perception and categories is a creation of the person or mind who created it. Therefore, Schopenaheur believes that "the world is a duality of the will and idea." Science, according to Schopenhauer is concerned with categories and goals and the will for Schopenhauer, has none of these things. The will has no goal and is therefore unable to be understood by science. Furthermore, the will has no subcomponents or hidden parts, it is simply the will, or the desire to survey. It can not be described in an a priori sense, because it cannot be molded into a category and since Science is an a priori concept, it is unable to explain the will in its sense. Furthermore, the will cannot be molded or shaped, there is no way to destroy the will, it is philosophical, unlike a sensation and therefore, it can not easily be perceived in any light. The medium of science was, according to Schopenhauer, unable to process or mold, the will in it's concept and therefore, is unable to deal with the problems of life.

Critical Evaluation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Critical Evaluation - Essay Example Focusing too much on Pacheco’s argument that Behn’s novella is ‘Eurocentric’ and ‘class-biased’, the review fails to provide a balanced view of Pacheco’s commentary, and leaves the reader clueless about Pacheco’s objective in writing the essay– exposing the political agenda underlying Behn’s novella, and its failure in achieving an ideological closure. The review begins with a clearly stated objective of exploring the main points of Pacheco’s essay and analysing its strengths and weaknesses; however, proceeds to describe Pacheco’s arguments and illustrations that suggest Behn’s hero as ‘Eurocentric’ and ‘royalist.’ A significant portion of the review is spent on summarising Pacheco’s viewpoints, and presents little attempt to analyse or interpret Pacheco’s observation in the backdrop of her thesis or the primary text. At many places like when describing Pacheco’s comments on ‘Europeanizing the African’ and Behn’s approach to slavery, the reviewer simply repeats Pacheco’s words as in a simple narration of the article, without quoting the author, or interpreting the implications of Pacheco’s observations. The review is totally oblivious of Pacheco’s commentary on Oroonoko’s treatment of honour and its instability withi n the upper-class/royalist discourse due to the religious implications, which according to her eventually leads to the undermining of the novel’s royalist ideology. While the review provides crucial insights into the perspective of Pacheco’s analysis, it does not endeavour to assess or evaluate the strength or weakness of her claims or offer a comprehensive framework for the readers to make the assessment themselves. Though the reviewer make a note of other works that substantiate Pacheco’s thesis such as that by Guffey, the commentary fails to provide a comparative perspective with other works for the reader to assess the merit and significance of Pacheco’s study. Importance of Measuring and Managing Performance Essay Example for Free

Importance of Measuring and Managing Performance Essay It is very important to measure and manage employee performance at Leyton Sixth Form College. The consequences if they don’t manage performance is that teachers won’t know whether they are progressing or not. Whether they’re way of teaching is effective or not. It is important for new employees to assess their performance so that management can make judgements on measuring performance will enable teachers to know where they stand and have a clear view on what skills they need to improve on. Motivation is important in LSC because it gets the employee to work as hard as possible. t helps push employees to achieve targets set. By identifying areas where an employee may be losing his colleagues, a personal development plan can be put in place. Similarly, if a negative trend is seen among a number of employees, company controls and procedures can be evaluated to address these problems at a general level. Measuring and managing performance helps LSC look at employee progress to see whether they are achieving all their targets. Also the importance of managing performance is to give good motivation for employees to work hard since they are being evaluated. LSC do an employee evaluation that gives teachers constructive criticism and an idea on what they need to work on and what they doing a good job on. Norman Rockwell Essay -- Art Rockwell Biographies Essays

Norman Rockwell Norman Percevel Rockwell was born on Feb. 3, 1894 in New York, New York. As a boy he grew fond of the country, where he moved to a few years after he was born, and stayed away from the city as much as he could, which would later be shown in his works (Buechner, Retrospective, 24). When he was 14, he had to commute to New York City twice a week to attend the Chase School of Fine and Applied Art. After awhile he dropped out of his sophomore year of high school, and became a full time student at The National Academy School (Buechner, Artist, 38). He illustrated his first Saturday Evening Post cover on May 20, 1916, which was his first big break. Norman Rockwell says, â€Å"If one wants to paint covers for the Post, one must begin by accepting certain limitations." The cover must please a vast number (no matter how: by amusing, edifying, praising; but it must please); it must not require an explanation or caption to be understood; it must have an instantaneous impact (people won’t bother to puzzle out a cover’s meaning)† (The Norman Rockwell Album, 29). More people have seen Rockwell’s work, mostly on the covers on the widely circulated Saturday Evening Post, more than all of Michelangelo’s, Rembrandt’s, and Picasso’s put together, estimated by Life magazine (Walton 7). Rockwell creates his pictures in separate stages. First he makes a loose rough draft of his idea. Second, he gathers costumes, props and models. Rockwell’s models are usually his friends, because he knows them and likes them (Walton 16). Later on in Rockwell’s lifetime he would stray away from using real models, he would use photographs to do this step instead. He would take either sketches or pictures and then paint them onto canvas. Next he draws individual parts of the picture. Fourth, he would sketch the whole drawing in great detail. Fifth, he would put color into his sketches, and sixth he would put all the parts together into the final painting (Buechner, Artist, 44). Rockwell used foreground invitation in many of his works. Foreground invitation means that the picture suggests that the viewer is entering the picture and into the scene. Rockwell’s subject matter is average America. For his first 30 years, he painted scenes of the country, childhood embarrassments, discomforts and humiliations (Buechner, .. ...early stages of childhood innocents, he told us the idealistic American Dream was and he persuaded us as a country to fight for what is right and protect our freedoms that our ancestors fought so hard for during World War II. Norman Rockwell had a style uniquely his own, his illustrations looking so real at times, that it looks like he had just photographed the image onto canvas. His style was so simple but told you everything you needed to know, this defined American art perfectly. This style was seen for the work he did in the Saturday Evening Post and different advertisements thorough his life. His work will be remembered always. Works Cited: Buechner, Thomas S. Human and Nature

This paper is about nature where I have used different metaphor to define different natural thing and a poem at the end. A metaphor is like a simile because it is a comparison that is made between things. However, the explicit use of the word ‘like' or ‘as' which you see in a simile, is not used in a metaphor which is rather a comparison of two unlike things using the verb â€Å"to be†. Hence, a metaphor sounds more forceful and suggestive, but is still very common in speech.Nature is the beautiful world around us apart from human made phenomena. Nature is beyond the human imagination, every creature has it’s own behavior and responsibility towards nature. We humans think ourselves most superior creature but we are the one not being responsible towards the nature. Nature has such power that we forget our sorrow when we are in it’s lap. â€Å"Nature is wisdom†, it has such a large creation that no human can ever think of it.I think Real wisdom l ies or exists within the greenery of Nature. Nature consist of galaxies, solar systems, planets, vegetation, including plants, grass and trees, Fowls, including birds, chickens and peafowl’s, Animals, including man the masterpiece of Creation nature's brainchild and other mammals, both on land and in the sea, Insects, reptiles, fish, bees and a host of other named and unnamed, known and unknown, species. The beauty of Nature is for all to see.The music of Nature an amazing thing where birds chirp and sing, soft sky has no end it’s like endless tunnel to nowhere, flowers are nature's makeup, thunder is the anger of clouds, volcano is the earth getting angry, mist is floating tear drops, rising sun is the wakeup call where as sunset is bedtime for all, stars are peek holes to heaven, moon is the flash light of god, snow is the cloud's dandruff , trees are apartment buildings for bugs, wind is nature’s breath. I think nature is really great. Nature is smile on our face.Nature has such a power that brings smile in our face. Even in this age of high technology, where many people who live in cities and work full time with computers are still aware of weather and the seasons. We all know that the short, rainy winter days is less pleasant than a warm sunny June day. Most of us cheered at the return of spring, and we mostly have certain pleasant or striking memories we associate with each season. But nature has lots of things beyond seasons which can really pleasant our life and make lots of beautiful memories.Nature is mother she feeds us like a child. We all know that basic things that keep us alive come from nature. But we are so selfish that we think of ourselves rather than thinking of nature. We just take from nature and never think of returning. Humans are greedy beast . We are busy fulfilling our desire rather than remembering our responsibility. We think that we are in the industrialized world and there is nothing that human being cannot a chieve nowadays we have been to the moon, and have invented the Internet.Mesmerized by these fascinating achievements, there is one thing that people should not forget: what we depend on. How long would we be able to live without nature and without technological advancement? We had been living without technology for thousand of year but without nature we have not spend a single moment. Even if we destroy us, plus most of other life form, there will still be nature. The soil, ocean, atmosphere and weather would still interact with solar power to allow some life to exist. Earth cannot be a barren place like the moon with any life.Nature is life. Thus we have to be aware of nature and raise our voice to save nature. Nature Nature is our mother she feeds us like a child. All creatures are our siblings so let’s keep them alive. Flower and plants are her makeup that keeps her like a bride Do plantation to keep the bride pride. Wind is her breath that keeps us alive Say no to pollu tion to have a healthy life.Rivers are blood in her vein Never put harmful chemical that makes her pain. Today everything seem to be modern and computerized But actual thing is that nature is our life Nature is our mother; Nature is our life, Save the nature, and save your life. The Philosophy The Moral Life Essay - 1164 Words

Before the beginning of the semester, I had a general understanding of three major philosophies- Utilitarianism, Deontology, and Feminism. These three philosophies come up frequently in my life. I judge an event in which philosophy is the main focus. In addition, I like to use these three principles in my moral judgments and decisions. Reaching the end of this class and semester I can say that my knowledge of these three philosophies has expanded immensely. The critical, informational, and literary aspects (stories that provide analysis) of the book The Moral Life has helped to increase my understanding and appreciation of the philosophies. I have used these philosophies in the past for personal, academic, and professional decisions and actions, however, I plan to use these philosophies in the same three areas for future actions and decisions. One area I would apply Utilitarianism is academically. To elaborate, I judge in debate competitions that rely heavily on philosophical theories. During standard rounds of debate, I hear arguments for and against Utilitarianism. I have actually never read, for myself, Bentham’s nor Mill’s interpretations of Utilitarianism. Therefore, The Moral Life and this class will help me in furthering discussions with competitors and fellow judges. Kai Nielsen is a good source of supporting material for Utilitarianism.
